EDG (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)

Upper Digestive Diagnostics and Treatment at The GastroEnterology Center

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, or EGD, is a procedure that allows specialists at The GastroEnterology Center to look directly at the upper digestive tract. EGD evaluation can diagnose:

  • Inflammation
  • Cancer
  • Changes in the upper digesting tract that may lead to cancer, such as Barrett's Esophagus

For your comfort patients are sedated during the procedure. A scope is passed from the esophagus into the stomach and down to the duodenum. A related procedure uses a special scope called an ERCP to examine the biliary tree, which leads to the liver.

EGD Procedure Is More Than Just a Diagnostic Tool

In addition to careful review of the digestive tract during an EGD procedure, GastroEnterology Center doctors can also:

  • Collect tissue samples
  • Treat bleeding ulcers
  • Remove blockages of food
  • Place feeding tubes, if needed
