C. difficile is a type of bacteria that often lives in the intestines without causing any problems. When the intestinal balance is thrown off, however, such as through the prolonged use of antibiotics, C. difficile can multiply out of control and cause an inflammation of the colon, or other more serious conditions such as colitis.
Bacteria, including C. difficile, is also shed in feces and can live on surfaces people frequently touch, such as doorknobs and faucet handles. So people who live or work in close quarters with others, especially those with already vulnerable immune systems, are at increased risk of infection. Handwashing and other hygiene measures can help prevent the spread of bacteria which can lead to infection.
