Capsule Endoscopy

Innovative Capsule Endoscopy by GastroEnterology Center Specialists

While an EGD can view the first 3 feet of the digestive system, and a colonoscopy the last 5 to 6 feet, there still remains about 12 to 20 feet of small intestine we can’t see easily. Highly trained specialists at The GastroEnterology Center offer an innovative solution, called capsule endoscopy. The capsule is a miniaturized camera in a pill form, which snaps about 50,000 pictures as it takes an 8-hour trip through the digestive tract.

State-of-the-Art Procedure Diagnoses Unreachable Parts of Small Bowel

Capsule endoscopy allows our gastroenterologists to view otherwise unreachable areas of the small bowel to diagnose:

  • Bleeding
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Polyps
  • Tumors

While capsule endoscopy cannot take biopsies and does not replace EGD and colonoscopy for more detailed images of the stomach or colon, it can be a useful and important diagnostic tool for many of our gastroenterology patients.
