Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis Diagnosis and Treatment at The GastroEnterology Center

Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver becomes severely scarred and function deteriorates. It is often tied to alcoholism or chronic hepatitis, though the condition can have other causes, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

GI specialists at The Gastroenterology Center are able to diagnose cirrhosis of the liver and determine an individualized plan for improved symptom management of this serious condition.

Symptoms of cirrhosis may include:

  • Bloating
  • Jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Spiderlike blood vessels on the skin
  • Tiredness
  • Weight loss

Liver Disease May Not Present Symptoms in Early Stages

Specialists at The GastroEnterology Center can expertly evaluate patients who are at risk for or may actually be in the early stages of cirrhosis. Liver damage often builds up slowly. In the early stages of cirrhosis, the liver continues to function and patients may be unaware of any damage to this vital organ.

Over time, cirrhosis can lead to more serious symptoms such as mental confusion or liver failure. Treatment for cirrhosis depends on the causes and how advanced the condition has become. Severe cases may require a liver transplant.
