C. Difficile

Diagnosis and Treatment for C. Difficile Infections at The GastroEnterology Center

When a bacterial infection such as Clostridium difficile, or C. difficile, occurs within the gastrointestinal tract, specialists at The GastroEnterology Center are able to provide an accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plan.

In many cases, medications are able to stop the infection, but severe cases may require more advanced treatment or even surgery. The earlier the diagnosis by trained GI physicians, the sooner successful treatment can begin.

See a specialist if you are experiencing any GI symptoms, including:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Blood or pus in your stools
  • Fever
  • Watery diarrhea

Controlling the Spread of C. Difficile Bacteria

C. difficile is a type of bacteria that often lives in the intestines without causing any problems. When the intestinal balance is thrown off, however, such as through the prolonged use of antibiotics, C. difficile can multiply out of control and cause an inflammation of the colon, or other more serious conditions such as colitis.

Bacteria, including C. difficile, is also shed in feces and can live on surfaces people frequently touch, such as doorknobs and faucet handles. So people who live or work in close quarters with others, especially those with already vulnerable immune systems, are at increased risk of infection. Handwashing and other hygiene measures can help prevent the spread of bacteria which can lead to infection.
